HALO held its first fundraiser event on September 5th, 2008 to benefit its Education Program. It was a lovely and successful event thanks to the participation of many generous individuals. The Fundraiser Committee made up of Founding Member, Thedy Brezault, along with Gracelle Toussaint, Maria Levasseur, with Serge and Irene Hyppolite worked closely with Michaël Vorbe of Citibank who sponsored the event for HALO. Special Recognition award was presented to artist David Beaubrun for his support of HALO. The mood was made special by Strings’ guitarist Jackie Ambroise who serenaded guests with his guitar all night long and who at some point was joined by Thedy Brezault on guitar for an entertaining “jam session”. Beautiful artwork by artists of Le P'ti Club and Mr. David Beaubrun were on display. Rachel Denis Moscoso and Emmanuel Ardouin of Pikliz along with Carl Fombrun were also on hand lending support to the event. HALO is grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Thedy Brezault for generously offering their home to host the event. Thanks to the support of Citibank and our guests we will be able to continue providing financial support to many students and school activities for the remainder of the year as well as the coming year.

Under the direction of teacher Mr. David Fenster students at Coconut Creek High School collected goods to send to Haiti as part of their contribution to the Hurricane Relief Effort there after many regions in Haiti were left devastated in the aftermath of Hurricane Hanna. HALO Student Members and Coconut Creek High School students Yves Elifis and Steve Charles were on hand at the warehouse to help pack the goods which they, with the help of Mr. Fenster, delivered to the warehouse. We are proud to have them as HALO member, not only are they great students but they also understand the importance of community involvement. Great job guys!

HALO was fortunate to have been one of the sponsors to make Daphnie Jean-Paul and Lourianne Appolon’s dream of attending SummerMath Program at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts a reality this summer. Both girls attend Miami Edison Senior High School and performed extremely well in Mathematics, hence their qualifying to attend the program. Mount Holyoke College is the first of the Seven Sisters--the female equivalent of the once predominantly male Ivy League--Mount Holyoke established higher education for women as a serious endeavor. Its SummerMath program is designed to improve mathematical skills in high school girls while giving them the experience of college life. SummerMath is a challenging four-week program that attracts a culturally, racially, and geographically diverse group of high school girls. While at SummerMath, students meet many challenges, both in class and beyond: solving difficult problems, not being told answers, working through the frustration of always being asked, "Why?", and living in an environment much different than their home community. As a result, students finish the program with a much stronger sense of self-confidence and self-esteem and greater strength in problem solving.
