HALO’s Third Annual Gala on January 19th at J.W. Marriott on Brickell is promising to be the best one yet. The theme this year is befittingly Bwa Kayiman. We say befittingly because unlike last year, the gala is taking place during Haiti’s independence month, January, instead of March as in last year. Some Haitian historians feel that the fight for independence started with the "Bwa Kayiman" meeting.

The gala will serve as the prelude to the Third Annual "Nurturing Our Youth for the Future" Convention which will take place the week following the gala from Friday, January 25th through Sunday, January 27th, 2008, at Barry University in Miami Shores. Cocktail hour will be from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Dr. Jerry Gilles is scheduled to guide guests with a short presentation as to the significance of "Bwa Kayiman" during the gala. Guests will be entertained by the folkloric dance troupe Sosiete Koukouy and groove the night away to the sounds of the great Sweet Mickey and his band. There will also be an Art Exhibit under the direction of Bernard Eugene featuring the work of Haitian artists, some of whom will be on site and ready to meet guests. There will be a silent auction of all exhibited art throughout the evening.

HALO is proud to inaugurate its First Annual HALO Essay Contest the night of the gala. This contest will take place annually and there will be a financial award to qualifying high school students upon selection of that student’s essay as one of the winning essays. Potentially there can be three winners as prizes are allocated as such: $1,000.00 for First Place, $500.00 for Second Place, and $300.00 for Third Place.

HALO’s galas are known for their varying themes. Our first gala was heralded as the "Unity Gala" and guests were treated to a lengthy and entertaining jam session by Sweet Mickey and Wyclef Jean when the latter made a surprise visit to the event. Last year’s gala "Konbit" kept the theme going along the same line of unity and working together. Guests were welcomed into an exquisitely decorated world of vivid colors with motif "à l’Haitienne" accentuated by an afro-centric feel. Both prior galas were very well attended and we expect the same for next year’s gala. Come and be part of history. Don’t miss this great night!
